Skills

Aim of Skills programme

To build a flourishing KNOWLEDGEABLE and SKILLED community: Where people of all ages can build new skills, and are afforded opportunities that can lead to training and employment.

We are aiming to reduce the number of barriers experienced by marginalised people that prevent them accessing mainstream education, training and employment.

In 2021, our after school projects saw a rapid escalation in numbers with more than 30 children regularly attending our homework club sessions, 3 times a week. These offer a safe, supervised and supported space for children to do their homework. As well as hands-on teaching support, children also have access to technology essentials not available at home, such as access to the internet, a computer and printer.

t's also been encouraging to work with directors of local schools who have been increasing the number referrals of children in need to our programme.

Throughout the year our popular 'Horizons' English groups have increased in size with 38 children now attending. This gives children who would otherwise be unable to have language lessons an opportunity to develop their English skills in a group environment. During the summer this project was again extended to include an English summer club for 30 kids.

This year we also started a book exchange. Families don't have access to a public lending library and cannot afford to buy books. It was joy to witness children with smiling faces as they borrowed a book and enjoyed reading and advancing their skills.

‘Learning Corners’

Thanks to the generosity of Albanian companies and individuals, 14 families with 3 to 5 children now have a ’learning corner’ in their homes, and much needed school supplies. We were also delighted to be able to install a larger shared ‘learning corner’ at our Tek Ura centre to serve dozens more families.

This is a short video montage of the ‘learning corners’ being taken to their happy families. It’s been a privilege to do this as part of the ‘Giving Circles’ initiative. The generosity of so many has made a life changing difference to these families, and on behalf of each one we would like to say ’thank you’.
